The Management of the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) has dismissed as false and misleading a viral video circulating on social media that alleges some of its students were arrested for collaborating with Boko Haram insurgents.
In a press release issued on Tuesday by the Office of the Registrar, the University described the claims as “totally baseless, false and mischievous,” stressing that no student of the institution has been found to have any link with Boko Haram or any similar extremist group.
The statement, signed by the Registrar, Ahmad A. Lawan, emphasized that the University of Maiduguri has zero tolerance for extremism, violence, or any activity that threatens national security.
“The University Management has at no time tolerated any form of extremism or violence. On the contrary, the University of Maiduguri has been at the forefront of countering violent extremism, promoting peace, and supporting national security efforts, particularly in the North East region,” the release stated.
Management further noted that the University community is made up of disciplined and law-abiding staff and students from diverse backgrounds who are primarily focused on academic and character development.
According to the statement, UNIMAID students have consistently demonstrated good conduct and a strong commitment to their studies, in line with the institution’s core values of learning, discipline, and moral responsibility.
The University urged parents, guardians, members of the public, and social media users to disregard the viral video and desist from spreading unverified information, warning that such false narratives could cause unnecessary panic and damage the institution’s reputation.
The press release reaffirmed the University’s commitment to academic excellence, moral discipline, peacebuilding, security, and national unity.
The University of Maiduguri remains one of Nigeria’s leading institutions contributing to education, peace, and stability in the North-East region.
