Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) Chemistry Syllabus

The primary objective of the UTME 2024 Chemistry syllabus is to adequately prepare candidates for the Board’s examination. The syllabus aims to assess their achievement of specific course objectives, which include:

(i) Understanding the fundamental principles and concepts in chemistry; (ii) Interpreting scientific data related to chemistry; (iii) Deducing the relationships between chemistry and other sciences; (iv) Applying the knowledge of chemistry to both industry and everyday life.

1. Separation of Mixtures and Purification of Chemical Substances

(a) Pure and impure substances (b) Boiling and melting points. (c) Elements, compounds and mixtures (d) Chemical and physical changes. (e) Separation processes: evaporation, simple and fractional distillation, sublimation, filtration, crystallization, paper and column chromatography, simple and fractional crystallization, magnetization, decantation.
